April 2009 Garden of the Month

The April, 2009 winner of the Garden of the Month award is the dramatically beautiful and always meticulously maintained garden at 17 Warbler Street, now in glorious spring bloom.
On the lane side, the spacious lawn, beautiful old trees, and large, rounded topiaries provide a lovely and elegant setting perfectly in scale and keeping with the handsome Tudor style mansion. This serene vista has been greatly enhanced by the gardener-owners by the addition of an elegant, classically-inspired fountain, handsomely encircled by lushly blooming irises, balanced by an expanded bed of small trees; large, flowering bushes; and flower beds.
Along the street side, the perimeter garden has been enhanced by the addition of iron fencing, new paving, and a colorful flower bed bordering the clipped hedge. Graceful palms provide height and feathery greenery between the hedge and house.

Le Petit Jardin for April, 2009 is the delightful and colorful entryway garden at 77 Thrasher Street. Here ascending levels bright clumps of flowers and hanging baskets add dramatic color and interest against the dark fence and muted shades of the background bushes and plants.

Honorable mention for April, 2009 is awarded to the lovely garden at 1840 Plover Street. Here a wide lawn, tall pines, deep beds of colorful flowers and dense greenery, foundation hedges, and flower borders provide a softening, graceful frame for the elegant, angular, brick and glass house. Adding dramatic interest in the foreground is a colorful flower garden centered by a large iron kettle brimming over with flowers.

GARDENS OF THE MONTH
February, 2009
The February, 2009 winner of the Garden of the Month award is the beautiful, classically structured garden on Wren Street. On the lane side, a huge old magnolia tree provides the focal point for an elegant design of shaped small trees, clipped bushes, an arched trellis, and raised flower bed. This month the structural greenery is enlivened by a dramatic floral composition of richly-hued colors: from the magenta flowering tulip tree, pink camellias, rings of purple and white flowers encircling the tulip and citrus trees, and the raised bed overflowing with a gorgeous display of old garden flowers in vivid shades of deep purple, violet, lavender, cobalt blue, and white, accented by touches of coral.
The narrow perimeter and entry-way garden on the street side is similarly composed of a tiered hedges of greenery on either of the entry gate, through which can be seen a riotous display of red and white camellias bordering the walkway.

Honorable Mention for February, 2009 is awarded to the delightful, bucolic garden on Flamingo Street . This restful, mature garden, almost country-like in feeling, features multilevel perimeter plantings and beds of deep purplish-blue and lavender spring flowers, bright pink roses, bright green foliage, and unifying clumps of variegated liriope and ginger, which curve around a spacious lawn. A large old magnolia encircled by a thick bed of iron plants acts as a focal point in front of the house.

Le Petit Jardin for February, 2009 is the eye-catching, highly original, street-side garden on Swan Street. In this dramatically designed entry-way garden, a stark white-pillared iron fence and pebble-and-stone paving provide the formal setting for a minimalist design of sculpturesque tropical plants, topiaried bushes, and geometrically shaped beds of bright pansies and cabbages in lively Mardi Gras colors.

Lake Vista Garden Club President , Sallie Walker, and Lake Vista Property Owners Association Beautification Chairperson, Patricia Fullmer, celebrate Arbor Day, January 16, 2009 with the planting of 22 Live Oaks in our Sub Division. Thank you to everyone who gave donations that allowed this event to be possible.

January, 2009 Garden of the Month

The January, 2009 Garden of the Month is at # 20 Snipe Street. Spreading across the lane and east sides of the pie-shaped lot, this handsome garden – now in full bloom -- is designed with a wide, curving bed of yellow pansies, rose pink azaleas, and agapantha to provide interest and to soften the rectangular lines of the house and front porch. Additional interest is provided by the beautiful old camellia trees covered with masses of deep rose-pink blossoms which frame the house, and by a lush and inviting side garden, featuring palm trees, bird of paradise, and a lovely pond.

Le Petit Jardin for January, 2009 is the charming entry-way garden at #9 Jay Street. In this delightful street-side garden, design interest is provided by the diversity of plant shapes, sizes, color palette, and foliage patterns in which the long linear foliage of the palm, palmetto, bird of paradise, and variegated liriope contrast with the glossy, fat crotons and with the dainty leaves and flowers of the sasanquas and azaleas. The color palette of deep pink, oranges, coral, and varying shades of green harmonizes with the muted pale salmon shade of the house and grayish blue-green shade of the shutters and helps carry out the tropical theme.

January Honorable Mention

Honorable mention for January, 2009 is awarded to the elegant garden of 20 Lark Street. On the lane side, the rectangular lawn is framed by formal beds of tiers of fuschia and purple flowers, small and medium-sized azaleas and camellias blooming in shades of coral, salmon, deep rose – lovely against elegant gray façade of the house and the tall, dark green hedges on each side. Small, flowering tulip trees provide elegant accent pieces.

The street side features beds of mature bushes – including large nandinas with masses orange-red berries and coral blooming azaleas – surrounding the semi-circular parking court, and beautifully accented by the dramatic pink Angel’s trumpet tree in the east corner and by dark-green topiaries on each side of the entrance.
